Wind Turbines Energy lights up Blackpool

Blackpool City Council implemented an effective, visually fitting method of generating sustainable energy to cope with high electricity usage.

Challenge

World famous for its spectacular illuminations, Blackpool has a high price to pay when it comes to electricity. The tourist attraction ‘festival of lights’ has an annual energy bill of approximately £1 million which puts extra pressure on Blackpool’s energy supply.

The UK Government’s introduction of CO2 reduction targets highlights the requirement for a renewable energy source that will contribute to lowering emissions while still maintaining the standard of the Blackpool illuminations display. To combat the high running costs and ease extra demand for energy, Blackpool Council needed a cost-effective source of electricity. The solution had to be reliable to ensure that continuous power is available and if located in public areas, safety implications are paramount.

Solution

Blackpool Council has initially opted for two Proven/Kingspan 6 emulation wind turbines that will be later upgraded to 15 machines. Blackpool’s coastal location is in an excellent position to harness the power of the wind and turn it to their advantage. The power generated from the turbines can be logged easily to determine how many will be required to complete the project. These turbine was chosen due to its reputation for being a robust, reliable and safe machine. The uninterrupted coastal location made opting for wind power the perfect choice.

Benefit

Once upgraded to the 15 machines, the turbines will provide up to 60,000kWh annually and dramatically reduce the energy bill. The illuminations are a significant feature of the town, which means Blackpool uses more power than other councils. The introduction of wind power will also play a large part in the reduction of CO2 emissions and bring Blackpool Council in line with Governments targets. The contemporary design of the Kingspan turbine suits Blackpool’s modern image and as well as being known as “Britain’s Vegas”, the town is rapidly becoming acknowledged for its care for the environment through renewable energy.
